Notarizing an Advance Healthcare Directive at the Hospital
Hospital bedside notarizations are common for healthcare directives and DNRs. Here's how mobile notaries approach them safely.
Hospital bedside notarizations require extra care. The notary must independently confirm that the patient is alert, oriented, and not under heavy sedation that would impair their ability to understand the document.
If the patient cannot speak clearly, cannot identify themselves, or cannot answer basic orientation questions (name, date, location), the notary should decline. Family pressure does not override these requirements.
Most mobile notaries serving hospitals carry portable ID-verification tools, a backup witness when required, and the appropriate state-specific advance directive forms. Many states require two witnesses for healthcare directives executed in a hospital setting.
